  • What is the check-out period for books?

The check-out period for all items except reserve books is three-weeks.  Books are never due on a day the library is closed.

The loan period for reserve books is three hours, and they may not be taken from the library.

  • How do I renew the items I have checked out? Can I renew them online?

RTS students and Alumni may renew each item twice, unless it is needed to fulfill a class reserve reading.  Other library users may renew each item once.

Once you have reached your renewal limit for an item, you must return it to the library to be re-shelved and made available for other students and library users.

You may renew your items at the circulation desk at the library, or online through your account available on the online catalog--the login is at the top right corner.

You will need your library card number and PIN number to access your account.  Your default PIN number is the last four digits of your barcode number.

For more detailed renewal instructions, go here.

  • Where and when can I return items I have checked-out?

You return your items at the circulation desk during normal operating hours of the library.  A book drop is located by the library entrance for returning items after-hours.

  • How much are overdue fines?

RTS Students are not charged overdue fines.  Otherwise, the charge is .10 per day.

  • What if I've lost or damaged a book?

We encourage you to replace lost or damaged items with an identical item in new, like-new, or very good condition.

For books, the replacement item must be completely free of underlining, writing, highlighting, stains, a torn cover or any pages, as well as have solid binding.

For media items, they must come with all of the original packaging and supplemental material, such as guidebooks, transcripts, or liner notes.

If the lost or damaged item is not replaced, the cost will be equal to the retail price of a new item plus a $5 processing fee.   Library staff will determine the final replacement cost for all items.

Any overdue fine for a lost or damaged book is waived, and not added to the replacement cost.

  • What if I need a book or a journal article that the library does not own?

The RTS library provides an inter-library loan (ILL) service to currently enrolled RTS students.  This service is not available to other library users.

When you locate a book or journal article you need, but is not owned by the RTS Jackson library, you may submit an inter-library loan request for it.

  • How do I make an ILL request?

1. Complete an Inter-Library Loan request for either a journal article or a book.

2. Prior to submitting a request, make sure you provide all of the following information.

    * Author’s full name
    * The full title of the book or source journal and journal article title (no abbreviations)
    * The page range for journal articles
    * Date of publication for a book, or the year/volume and month/number for journals

3. An inter-library loan usually takes two weeks to arrive. You will be contacted by email when your item(s) arrive.

  • How do I access the library's databases off-campus?

When you are off-campus, the EBSCOhost and other links to subscription databases will direct you to the RTS proxy server login.  Use your Self-Service ID and Password at this login to have access to all of the subscription databases.

MAC Students: Accessing the Psychology and Behavioral Science Collection database when you are not on campus requires a separate set of login credentials that you will enter at this EBSCO login screen. Please send a request with your name and student id to library.jackson@rts.edu to receive the current login id and password.

If you need any assistance accessing the databases, please call (601) 923-1623 or e-mail library.jackson@rts.edu.

  • I need to search for a journal article, where should I go?

You will find full-text articles in the databases accessed through EBSCOHost, as well as citations to journals the library owns

To see if the library owns the journal you need the artcile from, go to the Journals Holding page for the complete list of the journals owned by the library.

If we do not own the journal, you may still obtain it by making and Inter-library loan request.  ILL forms available here.

  • May I check books out if I am not an RTS student?

If you are an RTS Alumni or a currently enrolled graduate or post-graduate seminary student you may qualify for guest library borrowing privileges.

You must also have a local residential mailing address.  If you are not a local resident of Jackson or one of the surrounding municipalities, you do not qualify for borrowing privileges.  If you meet these qualifications, submit your Guest Library Card request here.

If you are an undergraduate student at Mississippi College, Belhaven, Millsaps, Jackson State University, or a Hinds or Holmes Community Colleges, you do not qualify for borrowing privileges.

You do not need to check-out or download an e-book to view it.

You may view the full text of the e-book online at any time.

You only need to check it out if you want to read it offline on your PC, laptop, or other device.

The instructions for downloading or checking out an e-book are below.
